Editorial Review

A little girl dreams of a library in outer space, where she is the only occupant - until the Doctor (David Tennant) and Donna (Catherine Tate) arrive. So, are they just figments of the girl's imagination, or is the library real? And if so, where is everyone else?

Soon after the Doctor and Donna start exploring, a team of archaeologists arrive, led by Professor River Song (Alex Kingston). They too want to know what's happened to everyone, and the Doctor discovers that there's something lethal lurking, quite literally, in the shadows.

This episode of Doctor Who switches between the two storylines (the library and the little girl), only hinting at how these two disparate scenarios may be connected. You know that they have to be, but the joy is in letting it unfold in its own time. Ultimately though, it raises more questions than it answers. What is real, and what is illusion? What is in the shadows? And why does River Song knows so much about the Doctor…?

Doctor Who: Silence in the Library airs on ABC1 on Sunday, 24 August, at 7.30pm.

Tim Hunter, August 2008
