Can We Help?

Editorial Review

If you're sick of watching coverage of the Olympics, this program is worth a look. This is a daggy but charming diversion from non-stop sports.

Editorial Review

Peter Rowsthorn is joined by his cohorts Kate Burridge and Geoff Hutchison to investigate trivial but pressing questions asked by viewers. Geoff looks into an important 1930s air race, Kate attempts to uncover the origins of the phrase "goody two-shoes", and Peter finds out whether there's any truth to handwriting analysis.

This episode's special guest is internet expert Richard Keeves, who answers questions that seem to have been submitted by from older, less web-savvy viewers: what is phishing? Where did the internet come from? And exactly how big is the internet? (Answer: no one's sure, but it's probably pretty huge.)

The episode also addresses bigger issues: one heart-warming segment helps a British man overcome his fear of flying in order to journey to Australia and reunite with the son he hasn't seen in 20 years.

Can We Help? seems to be pitched at an older audience - most younger viewers could jump on the internet and find the answers to most of these mysteries by themselves. Nevertheless, the series is an informative and entertaining - if not especially compelling - half an hour.

Can We Help? airs on ABC1 on Friday, August 22, at 6:30pm.
