Editorial Review

What started out as a wedding celebration in Munich in 1810 has now made its way to Brisbane's RNA Showgrounds as a fun festival of everything German - food, music, dancing and of course, beer! So pull on the lederhosen, puff up the dirndls and work up an appetite for Oktoberfest Brisbane 2008. Held over the last two weekends of September, this year's event is expected to attract 20,000 visitors. Take respite from the Queensland sun under the canopy of Moreton Bay figs trees as you enjoy a traditional German stein in the beer garden. A tantalising array of Bavarian food will be freshly baked on site and available throughout the festival. Devour pretzels, Bavarian cheese delicacy obatzda, wood-fired German sausages and a range of German cakes, pastries and desserts. And of course don't leave without sampling the ever-popular decorated gingerbread hearts called lebkuchenherzen.

Local and international entertainers, including a six-piece “Oompah” band from Munich and local dancing and cow bell ringing troupe Alpenrosen, will keep you entertained as you munch away on the delicacies available. Musicians, yodellers, puppeteers and traditional folk dancers will also be roaming the showgrounds. For more information including ticket prices and opening hours visit www.oktoberfestbrisbane.com.au . Last year's visitors consumed 60,000 steins of beer, more than 6,000 sausages and thousands of pretzels and cakes. Care to take on the challenge in 2008?

Lauren Barker, September 2008
