Editorial Review
Hip hop and R&B have been driving popular music in Australia for the last 10 years. Whether it's homegrown acts like Bliss N Eso and Hilltop Hoods, or international stars like Rihanna and Timbaland, the music and culture is basically everywhere. That might seem like a fairly obvious statement, but it wasn't that long ago that radio and TV didn't want to know. And God help you if you weren't a fan of AC/DC, Cold Chisel, meat pies and watching the footy.
Things have obviously changed a lot and urban music is now a major cultural force here in Australia. While we've certainly had our fair share of singers, rappers and producers emerge locally, for the most part it's been the DJs who have really made an impact. Guys like Nino Brown and, more recently, DJ Sir-Vere.
The Auckland native has been kicking around the urban music landscape since ‘93, promoting the music in any way, shape or form. Although he started as a DJ, he soon moved into radio, event promotion and eventually television. His Major Flavours radio show has been running for several years now and although there have been several mix CD instalments released back in New Zealand, Australia got its first taste last year.
With a new local instalment set for release, Major Flavours 3, Sir-Vere is once again out on the road, cross fading between acts like 50 Cent, Rick Ross, Akon and Nelly Furtado.
