Sequels, as a general rule, should only be considered if the material meets or exceeds the quality of the original. Fortunately, this has swung in heavy favour for Mum's the Word 2: Teenagers!, the latest production from Burberry Productions, Dainty Consolidated Entertainment and Newtheatricals. The premise for the original came from a group of Vancouver actresses. Coming to terms with their newfound roles as mothers, they worked out material for the show Mum's the Word, which premiered at the Vancouver Festival in 1993. It proved a hit, running for the next 12 years, being translated into five languages and having 14 productions take it to 10 different countries.
More than a decade on, Mum's the Word 2 ups the ante, as sweet-faced cherubs grow into rebellious, moody teens. The mothers look at their own lives, growing old as their children grow up. This hit production made its Australian debut in Melbourne in 2007. In 2008 it kicks off in Brisbane and Sydney from May. The cast of five include a who's who of television, stage and radio: Tracy Bartram, Katrina Foster, Jean Kittson, Victoria Nicolls and Louise Siversen. If you have ever wished the earth to swallow you on account of your mother's embarrassing antics, or cackled with delight due to inflicting said antic on your stroppy adolescent offspring, then this hilarious production is not to be missed.
