Looking at the advertising all over Brisbane with the huge bold 'Picasso and His Collection' lettering over the orange background you'd be forgiven for thinking this exhibition was about the works of Picasso. But really, the emphasis is on the pieces of art he collected, how he acquired them and the influence they had on his own work. Certainly his paintings and drawings are a large feature of the exhibition, but they are slotted in among his collected pieces of work - featuring no less than Matisse, Renoir, Miro and Dali to name but a few.
The gallery has grouped the collection into styles mapped against Picasso's own journey through his long life. Not one for boredom, Picasso went through many different stages from surrealism to African art. He seemed to have a knack of being ahead of trends which meant he could find art in second-hand stores that had been overlooked by others. Most of the artwork he owned was mainly obtained through a bartering system - his own work in return for someone else's. It is interesting to see some features of the art he owned turn up in his own paintings - not as plagiarism but more as an inspiration for his own ideas. This is a great collection selected by a great master.

Michael Burrows: What is Tony Elwood thinking, competing with the art of Maxwell Smart; surely a display of his craft would be more appealing during the school holidays. (10 July 2008)
Joukje Kelly: Yes, worth a look. However, I was dissapointed at the lack of Picasso's own work. felt the advertising slightly misleading. When viewing I heard many comments on lack of "his" work. I'm not fom B'ne and travelled 5 hours to see this. Slightly dissapointed. (04 July 2008)
