Editorial Review

8 December '07 - 13 April '08

Warhol has to be the most famous artist to exhibit in the short, one-year history of the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art. With 300 pieces, this is also the most extensive Warhol exhibition ever. All the iconic screenprints are in attendance, including the Marilyn, Electric Chair and Campbell Soup series, but as an added bonus there are pieces like the Time Capsules, which contain mundane everyday things such as the lid of a can of peanuts. Warhol always found beauty in things that were seemingly boring.

Even though his images are such a huge part of modern popular culture and we've all probably seen them thousands of time before, nothing seen in a book or on television can prepare you for seeing a Warhol print firsthand. Some have dirty splashes on them which are likely to be remnants from a big night at the Silver Factory, others aren't even complete. On display is an unfinished Campbell Soup print which gives an insight in to the process Warhol employed to remove his own paint strokes from the edging.

The exhibition is comprehensive, starting with his illustrations of shoes for magazines when he started as an artist, travelling through the screen print era, the portrait films, the photography and even includes a Velvet Underground section. There is also an area for kids to play in, so they too can get the Warhol experience.

This exhibition is worth a special trip, even if you don't live in Brisbane. It's not touring interstate and is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view so many Warhol works in one place, so don't miss it. Fantastic!  Amy O'Brien (11 December viewing)

Maggie S: It was okay, not my type of art but....... okay, okay I did'nt like it. (08 April 2008)

maggi d: not that impressive an artist...different; the exhibit was well presented and gave one a good insight into what made the man tick. (07 April 2008)

tara deans: i may only be 16 years old, but the pieces in his collection moved me and found that place inside that just burst to life from seeing such honest, famous and spectacular art work....if only i could do something as great as that as my OP art project. instead of my usual A i would get my own gallary. andy was stuck in the wrong time zone...but then again he wasn't. he created most of his pieces back in the 70's and 60's and yet today they speak louder then they did back in those days. (31 March 2008)

yas: does anyone know if the exhibit is going to melbourne?....and if so when?. thanx heaps! (31 March 2008)

Rosy: I would say to anyone to see it and see a lot of more artist to have a good opinion. Lots of other artists in the world. Maybe no sooo commercial and into consumerism. Just the reflection of our modern society. Look at yourself and see that same. (29 March 2008)

Ellie: the Andy Warhol exhibit was exiting and prvided heaps of information but at the same time it was enjoyable. my favorite part was the silvor cloud room and 15 seconds of fame and also were you get your pictures taken and then send them to yourself. it is most enjoyable to go to the Andy Warhol exhibit with friend or family. (21 March 2008)

Cathy: I didn't know much about him except that he seemed strange and a little cruel (thinking Edie Sedgwick). I wanted to go as it was an opportunity that will probably not arise again. I really enjoyed it and found myself spending more than two hours there and could have stayed longer. He was ahead of his time with consumerism and marketing that is now a part of everyday life that he saw coming before we allowed it to take over our lives. Recommend everyone to see it before it goes. Great experience even if you don't really like art. (19 March 2008)

Bernice Denison: I found myself to be within a breath space of Andy's self-portrait. I stared intently at every brush stroke, every line and suddenly was totally overwelmed with the thought of, "my god Andy stood this close and painted this!!" I felt I had had the privilage to be, if not for a few moments of time, in the presence of a true artistic visionary. (01 March 2008)

Gabby: Coming from a town void of anything of the likes of an Andy Warhol exhibition, visiting this exhibition showcasing the amazing talents of someone so famous as Warhol was incredible. The inclusion of half finished pieces allowed the audience to full gauge how he fashioned his pieces allowing a greater sence of appreciation, for the talented Mr Warhol. The order was well thought out. Making it a fabulous treat for the senses, after a day in the gallery one cannot feel anything but creative (25 February 2008)

Greg Josephson T: Utterly breath taking and deeply informative. In top 5 best things I???ve done! Completely smitten by them in the flesh. Far more rich and sophisticated than you can possible know by viewing prints alone. I discovered His profound grasp and love of humanity. Expected to find rockstar-like blas?? disengagement from society.I found he celebrated the honest, trashy elements that are our denominators that form our true social definition! I was educated and humbled by his spiritual gravity and genius! (10 February 2008)

Chris Doneley: Such a famous name and when you consider the work behind the scenes to get this collection together, it really is a wonderful opportunity for people to see it and take away what you will. I was surprised at his creativity when he as a person comes across as empty headed. I came away thinking that it was all about his connection with the world of celebrity. He dared to be in full flight with he believed to be creative art for the world. (10 January 2008)
